Our History

Parents & Children Preschool began as a co-operative nursery school in 1942 on the grounds of a local church on Foothill Boulevard in La Cañada. The original parent founders, led by Beth Leonard, wanted their children to have the important learning experience of "getting along with their peers" - a concept that today is taken for granted, but at the time was considered progressive.

The basic philosophy of the school has remained unchanged – a testimony to Mrs. Leonard who remained vitally interested in the welfare of the school until her death in 1987.

"The best things in life aren't things."

-Art Buchwald

By 1944, after just two years, Parents & Children had outgrown the original site, became a non-profit corporation and moved to the Red Cross building down the road. In 1971, construction of the 210 freeway meant the destruction of the Red Cross site. So Mrs. Leonard then purchased our current property on Indianola Way and moved the school there in 1973.

In 1987, when the school's property was then put up for sale, the parent association embarked upon a major fundraising effort to purchase the school. To this day, the parent association uses fundraising to continually improve our school.

"Sometimes, I've believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast."
